Happy National Employee Appreciation Day!

No matter where you are in your career, being told you are appreciated is one of the simplest yet rewarding things you can hear. While we shouldn’t reserve appreciation for one day of the year, we’re all about having a day set aside to celebrate the people we appreciate.  National Employee Appreciation Day is observed annually on the first Friday in March. This day was created in 1995 as a way to encourage employers to focus on employee recognition. On this day, businesses and organizations plan celebrations recognizing the contributions and achievements of their employees.

Employees who feel appreciated have increased job satisfaction, resulting in higher performance. Everyone wins when effort is appreciated. On National Employee Appreciation Day an employer may show appreciation in a variety of ways ranging from verbal recognition, to awards and company celebrations.

Here are some great ways to show your employees some appreciation, everyday!

  • Let Employees Have Input In Decisions
    Your employees will likely be heavily impacted by many decisions you make, why not let them have some input before making a decision? Since they are the ones working with your product firsthand, they will probably have some valuable insight. Plus, knowing they are being heard and their opinions are valuable is an excellent way to show them appreciation.

  • Be Specific With Praise
    Thanking them and telling them they are doing a good job from time to time is definitely nice, but giving a specific compliments is way better. Tell them exactly what they did that you appreciated and why you appreciated it. Being specific also inspires employees to further develop their skills in that specific area. Handwritten praise also means a lot more than an email!

  • Be Flexible
    Flexibility goes a long way in this digital world. If possible in your industry, adding a little flexibility can reap huge benefits when you need last minute work done or big projects finished. Giving your employees a little flexibility when they have personal matters to attend to will mean a ton to them. If it’s a possibility, allow them to finish up at home. Talk with them and find a solution that works for both of you.

  • Feed Them
    One way to an employee’s heart is through their stomach. Put treats in the break room or drop something off at each of their desks. It’s an easy way to say “thank you”. Pro tip: Have lunch catered for National Employee Appreciation Day!
